47% of counties in Virginia are classified as EPA Zone 1 (highest radon potential), meaning predicted average indoor radon levels exceed 4 pCi/L — the EPA action level. The EPA recommends that all homes be tested for radon, regardless of zone classification.
Measured Radon in Virginia Homes
The EPA zones below come from a 1993 map built mostly from geology and the limited test data available then. The Virginia Department of Health has since collected radon test results from test kit vendors for 2016–2024 — first test, lowest lived-in floor, homes only — and reports an average for each county and independent city with at least 25 tests. Of 133 localities, VDH’s averages put 47 High (over 4 pCi/L), 40 Moderate, 14 Low, and 32 with too few tests to say. In 21 localities the measured average lands in a higher band than the EPA zone predicted.
VDH cautions that these averages should not be used to predict radon in any single home — the only way to know is to test.
